October 29, 2006

BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- The Longwood men’s soccer team defeated the visiting Hartwick Hawks 3-1, Sunday afternoon in its final game of the season, at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  The Lancers, who with the win won their third-straight contest, finished with an overall record of 6-8-4 and 2-2-2 Atlantic Soccer Conference mark, while the Hawks fell to 8-9-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.  Senior Justin Williams/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) made his senior day a memorable one, as the lone senior for the class of 2007 netted what proved to be the game winner in the 26th minute.

The Lancers wasted no time to brake onto the scoreboard as freshman Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) took a through ball from sophomore Adam Kotchin/North Hanover, N.J. (The Hun School of Princeton) and dribbled in the Hawk’s 18-yard box for a one-on-one with keeper Joe Gibson.  Diallo beat Gibson low to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead just 0:36 into match.  Junior Tyler Marsh/Mechanicsville, Va. (Atlee) came in to relieve Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) in goal 2:20 into the match, after Youmans was hurt on a collision with a Hartwick player.

Longwood padded its lead to two goals with 18:23 to go in the half, as Kotchin laid off a pass to Williams who made a quick move to his right and drove a hard shot into Hartwick’s net for the 2-0 lead. The Hawks answered less than a minute later as Chris Jackson converted on free kick just 20-yards out for the 2-1 score.

The Lancers put their lead back up to two goals less than five minutes later on a goal from junior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird).  Diallo took a ball from the left side and crossed it over to Harney who was standing just outside the Hawk’s box.  Harney volleyed in the pass for his fourth goal of the year, giving Longwood a 3-1 halftime lead.

Longwood and Hartwick battled for possession in the final forty five minutes.  The Hawks fired six shots at Marsh, but the junior keeper turned them all away preserving the 3-1 victory.  Marsh finished the match-up with four saves.  Hartwick out shot Longwood by a count of 10-5 and had a 6-0 advantage on corners.
