October 27, 2006

BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- The Longwood University field hockey team fell 1-0 to Radford on a late goal that was hit in as time expired Friday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  Longwood falls to 4-13 on the season and 1-4 in NorPac play, while Radford improves to 5-13 overall and 2-4 in conference play.  The Lancers will play their final game of the 2006 season Saturday afternoon, as they host Davidson in a 3 p.m. NorPac match-up.

In a driving rain the Lancers and Highlanders battled as both teams looked for the go-ahead goal.  Radford held the possession for most of the first half keeping pressure on the Lancer defense and keeper Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford).  West and the defense stood strong keeping all eight shots in the opening frame out of the net for a 0-0 halftime score.

The Highlanders kept the pressure on out of the break as Longwood was unable to get anything going offensively.  Radford was able to grab a penalty corner with 0:30 to go in the game and called a timeout to draw up a play.  As time expired, the Highlanders earned another penalty corner and ended the game there, as Jamie Sanders fired a pass from Kelsey McKeon to give Radford the 1-0 win.

The Highlanders out shot Longwood 14-2 and held a 14-4 edge in penalty corners.  West finished with nine saves in the contest.
