BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- The Longwood men’s soccer team earned its second win in as many games, defeating the VMI Keydets 1-0, Tuesday evening at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Longwood moves to 5-8-4 on the year while VMI falls to 2-14-1. The Lancers will close out its 2006 season when they host Hartwick in an Atlantic Soccer Conference match-up on Sunday October 29 kick-off scheduled for 1 p.m.. The match-up will also mark the final collegiate game for senior Justin Williams/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin).

Both squads battled in the opening minutes, but VMI came away with the best chance early on. After three consecutive corner kicks, the Keydets’ Michael Lloyd stood free in front of the net and headed the ball toward the upper right corner of the Lancer net. Junior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless with 27:00 to go in the half. The Lancers dominated the final twenty minutes as the Longwood offense tallied eight shots in the opening frame.

Longwood put together a quick counter along the right side line to grab the 1-0 lead with 12:15 to go in the half. Freshman Giovanni Peralta/Lorton (Robert E. Lee) took the ball along the sideline and sent a cross into the VMI 18-yard box, where classmate Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) volleyed it in for his second goal of the year.

Freshman Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) dribbled in on a breakaway as time was running down in the half, and put a low hard shot on VMI’s keeper Thomas Upton. Upton was charging out and kicked his leg out just in time to deflect the ball out as the first half came to an end.

The Lancers kept the pressure on in the second half, out shooting the Keydets 8-1. Youmans finished the game with one save while Upton collected seven. Longwood held a 16-4 advantage in shots, while VMI took a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
