FARMVILLE, Va.-- The Longwood field hockey team suffered a 5-0 loss to the visiting Stanford Cardinal Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The loss puts the Lancers at 1-3 in the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) and 4-12 overall, while Stanford improves to 4-1 in conference play and 7-9 overall. Longwood will return to action on Friday October 27, as they host Radford in a 4 p.m. conference match-up.
Stanford wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard, recording its first goal 2:56 into the contest as Rachel Mozenter tallied her first of two goals taking a pass from Caroline Hussey and sliding it past Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) for the 1-0 lead. Mozenter tallied her second goal a short time later, as she one timed a cross that came in from the right side to give the Cardinal a 2-0 lead six minutes in.
Stanford added two more goals before halftime to hold a 4-0 cushion over the Lancers. Jess Zutz made it 3-0 at the 7:39 mark, while Julia Drewes tallied the Cardinal’s final goal of the half on a penalty corner with 5:57 to go in the half.
Aska Sturdevan closed out the scoring for Stanford collecting a loose ball in front and firing it past West for the 5-0 final.
The Cardinal held the 20-4 advantage in shots and a 8-5 edge in penalty corners. West finished the contest making eight saves for the Lancers, while Madison Bell recorded the shutout for Stanford.
