BOX SCORE
CONWAY, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped a hard-fought 2-1 women’s soccer decision at Big South Conference opponent Coastal Carolina University Monday night near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The road loss stopped a four-match winning streak as the Lancers are now 9-5-2, while the Chanticleers improved to 10-3-1. Longwood will return to Farmville for its final home match of the season on Wednesday night, Oct. 18, hosting VMI for Senior Night at the Athletics Complex beginning at 7 p.m..
At Coastal, Longwood scored the first goal of the match at 15:38 when freshman Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) hit a 10-yard shot to the left corner of the net, assisted by junior Katie Young/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne). It was Mahon’s fifth goal this season, and Young’s third assist. The score stood for the remainder of the period as the Lancers led 1-0 at the intermission.
The Chanticleers finally got on the board at 59:59 as Heather Haupt took a well-placed free kick from midfield by Chelsea Terry and converted it into the back of the net from just seven yards. The hosts got the game-winner at 68:23 when Haupt scored again, this time on a shot from the left-side of the box to the right corner and assisted by Emily McColl.
“We played some of our best soccer of the year early and we got a goal out of it,” said 13th-year head coach Todd Dyer. “Things changed after that and just gradually slipped away from there. It’s tough to play on the road and beat good teams. We just have to find a way to hold it together and find a way to finish things off in situations like that.”
Coastal Carolina took a 13-7 edge in shots, though Longwood had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. Junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (90:00) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers with four saves. Jaclyn Stoll (90:00) also played the duration for the Chanticleers with four saves.
