BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va.-- The Longwood University men’s soccer team went into its third consecutive overtime on Sunday afternoon, but came away with 1-0 loss to New Jersey Tech at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers fall to 3-8-4 overall and 0-2-2 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference, while NJIT moves to 3-8-2 on the year and 2-1-1 in conference play. Longwood will head to Charlottesville, Tuesday October 17, to take on the fourth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers in a 7 p.m. match-up.
The Lancers dominated the first half notching five shots, while the Highlanders were unable to get any off in the first forty five minutes. The Lancers had the Highlanders back on their heels for most of the second half, testing the NJIT defense and goaltender Collin Cunning. Junior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) took a pass from Adam Kotchin/North Hanover, N.J. (The Hun School of Princeton) and ripped a shot from just outside the 18 yard box that sailed over the cross bar keeping the game scoreless. Longwood caught the NJIT defense on a quick transition later in the second half, as freshman Chernor Diallo/ Alexandria (Mount Vernon) carried the ball down the middle of the field and laid off a pass inside the box to senior Justin Williams/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) who one timed it over the goal.
In the 87th minute a Longwood midfielder was given a red card and sent off, leaving the Lancers to play a man down for the rest of the match. That didn’t stop Longwood, as they continued to attack offensively looking for the go-ahead goal.
After a scoreless first overtime NJIT’s Jo Rene Valentin took a throw in from Clay Smith and carried the ball into the Longwood 18-yard box and fired a shot that beat junior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) giving the Highlanders the 1-0 win.
