BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va.-- The Longwood University men’s soccer team battled Adelphi to a 1-1 tie on chilly Friday evening at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers now stand at 3-7-4 overall and 0-1-2 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference while Adelphi has recorded a 7-5-1 overall record and 3-0-1 conference record. Longwood will return to action on Sunday, October 15, as they host New Jersey Tech for a 1 p.m. ASC match-up.
Adelphi cashed in on an early Longwood mistake in the back, as Patrick Figueiredo picked up a loose ball just inside the 18-yard box and fired it past junior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) 1:39 into the match for the early 1-0 lead. Youmans was able to get a hand on it, but Figueiredo put too much behind it for his fifth goal of the year. Longwood quickly regrouped and applied pressure to the Panther’s defense and goalie Michael Hurley.
Freshman Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) took a free kick 20-yards out after Adelphi was whistled for a foul along the left side. Vickerton laid the ball off the junior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) who was charging down the middle of the field. Harney fired a hard one time shot low, but just wide of the net keeping the game at 1-0.
Longwood struck a short time later, as Harney took a pass from freshman Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) at the penalty stripe and one-timed it in the back of the net, knotting the game at 1-1 with 13:45 left in the opening half.
Longwood and Adelphi battled back and forth in the second half as both squads looked for the go-ahead goal. Vickerton caught the Panther’s defense by surprise when he booted a shot from 25-yards just over the cross bar mid-way through the second half.
The Longwood offensive charge took over in the extra periods, as the Lancers out shot Adelphi by a 4-1 count. The Lancers best chance came in the first overtime, on a shot by freshman Giovanni Peralta/Lorton (Robert E. Lee). Peralta controlled a rebound and beat the Panther’s goalie high, but the ball bounced off the cross bar and out for a goal kick.
Youmans anchored the Lancer defense making five saves in 110:00 of work while Hurley recorded four saves.
