Women's Soccer Runs Past Howard 7-2 In United Soccer Conference Action

Freshman Midfielder Kaylyn Mahon Scores Her Fourth Goal Of Season Against Bison

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 7-2 women’s soccer victory past visiting Howard University Friday in United Soccer Conference (USC) action at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  It was the fourth-straight win, and sixth win in seven matches overall for the Lancers who improved to 9-4-2 overall, 1-1 in the USC.  The Bison remained winless on the season at 0-12 overall, 0-3 in the USC.  Longwood will travel to South Carolina on Monday, October 16, to play at Coastal Carolina University beginning at 6 p.m..
    
Against Howard, Longwood scored the first three goals of the match and led 3-1 at the intermission en route to the decisive home triumph.  Senior Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam) tallied the opening goal, her fourth in two matches, at 8:56 and assisted by sophomore Cassie Lynn/Virginia Beach (Kellam) on a breakaway shot into the lower left corner of the net.  Freshman Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly) made it 2-0 at 32:14 when she shot to the right side after a touch-pass to the middle from classmate Colleen Thamm/Manassas (Battlefield).  Thamm added her own goal, her third in two matches, unassisted on a loose ball from a corner kick at 40:25 and the 3-0 advantage.  The Bison scored their first goal just 30-seconds before halftime with an unassisted chip-shot in the box from Aliyah Glenn at 44:30.
    
The Lancers added three more unanswered goals in the second half, the first at 49:09 as freshman Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) finished-off a loose ball that had caromed off the post.  Classmate Sarah Fening/Manassas (Battlefield) scored at 75:30, assisted by senior Lexi Torrice/Richmond (Douglas Freeman), and freshman Tia Nardella/Brookline, Mass. (Brookline) tallied a goal at 80:11 with an assist from Lynn again.  Howard put its second goal on the board at 82:42 when Elizabeth Williams scored unassisted on another chip-shot.  LU freshman Brenda Cary/Bristow (Brentsville) completed the scoring with yet another unassisted goal at 83:08.
    
Longwood took a 17-9 advantage in shots, and had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.  Junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (45:00, 1ga) played the first half in front of the net for the Lancers with two saves, while senior Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) (45:00, 1ga) played the second half with one save.  DeLaine Anderson (90:00) played the duration for Howard with three saves.
