Men's Soccer Finishes With 0-0 Stalemate At Radford

Brandt Youmans Recorded Five Saves In The Match-Up

October 10, 2006

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va.— The Longwood University men’s soccer team and the Radford Highlanders battled 110 minutes to a scoreless tie Wednesday evening at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium in Radford.  The Lancers are now 3-7-3 for the year, while Radford stands at 6-5-2.  Longwood will return to action on Friday, October 13, as they host Adelphi in a 7:30 p.m. Atlantic Soccer Conference match-up.

The Lancers got the first opportunity of the match, as a Highlander defender was whistled for a foul just outside the 18 yard box.  Freshman Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) looked to have put Longwood ahead 1-0, but the goal was waved off keeping the score at 0-0.  Radford pressed the Longwood defense and junior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) for most of the first half, but were unable to convert as both the defense and Youmans stood strong keeping the game at 0-0 heading into the break.

In a back and forth battle both the Lancers and Highlanders pressed the opposing defense looking for the go ahead goal.  Longwood saw the better of the opportunities as the game wore on throwing everything at the Radford defense.  Junior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) made his presence felt in the midfield, notching off five long hard shots that sailed wide or just over the cross bar.

Radford held a 15-8 edge in shots and 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.  Youmans finished the match-up with five saves while his counter part Zach Roszel recorded two.

“I am proud of the way our boys played tonight,” stated head coach Jon Atkinson.  “They came out and played a hard fought well disciplined match with a tough Radford squad.  We were able to overcome some early pressure from Radford and really get going in the later part of the game to put together some great opportunities.”
