Men's Basketball Wins Exciting 93-90 Overtime Triumph Past Visiting Hartford

Junior Captain Maurice Sumter Tallies Team-High 23 Points Against Hawks

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an exciting 93-90 men’s basketball overtime victory past visiting Hartford Saturday afternoon in Willett Hall.  The Lancers (4-16) stopped a five-game losing streak with the home win; led by junior Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) with 23 points and classmate Clayton Morgan/Brooklyn, N.Y. (Fashion Institute) with 20 points and 12 rebounds.  The Hawks (7-12) were led by Kenny Adeleke with 31 points and 15 rebounds, while Aaron Cook added 29 points.  Longwood will play again on Monday, Jan. 30, hosting IPFW in Willett Hall on-campus in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m..
    
Longwood and Hartford were tied at 79-79 through regulation before the Hawks led 83-81 at 3:17.  LU tied the game at 83-83 on a layup from sophomore Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrews) with 2:41 left, and led 88-83 at 1:03 on a jumper from Barrett (1:40) and a three-point field goal from Morgan (1:03).  After one of two free throws from Sumter with 33-seconds remaining in OT, the Hawks pulled within 89-88 at 0:08 on a three-pointer from Rich Baker after a pair of free throws earlier by Cook (0:54).  Morgan, however, secured the triumph with 4-4 free throws sandwiched around a layup from Adeleke.
    
The Lancers had taken an early 12-5 lead at the start as Sumter (5) and Barrett (4) scored nine quick points after a three-pointer from sophomore Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) opened the scoring.  Hartford tied it at 16-16 with 12:56 left as Adeleke scored nine points.  The Hawks opened a 37-30 lead at 5:52 as Adeleke tallied 10 more points inside, and the visitors still led 45-38 at 2:33 before LU scored the final 10 points of the half to lead 48-45 at the intermission as Sumter and Morgan each scored four points and Barrett closed the half with a jumper.
    
Hartford tied the game at 51-51 with 16:25 left in regulation before Longwood took its largest lead of the game at 68-56 with 8:58 left as Morgan scored inside to close a 17-5 run.  The run was highlighted by a baseline drive and thunderous dunk from Smith at 12:54 (60-54).  The Lancers still led 72-61 at 6:43 on a pair of free throws by Sumter before the visitors made a final push to force the extra period.  A 15-2 run put UH ahead 76-74 at 2:57 as Cook tallied consecutive three-pointers to close the run, adding a free throw on the latter for a rare four-point play.  A Sumter basket tied it at 76-76 (2:42), and a three-pointer from sophomore Brandon Giles/Gaithersburg, Md. (Magruder) put Longwood ahead 79-76 with 51-seconds left in regulation.  Cook forced the overtime with another three-pointer with 5.7-seconds left.
    
Sumter led Longwood with his team-high 23 points, adding four rebounds, while Morgan posted his fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds along with a career-high five assists.  Barrett finished with a season-high 18 points, adding five rebounds, while Giles and Smith each contributed nine points with Giles also dishing out a career-high eight assists.  LU shot 52% (35-68) from the field, including 47% (8-17) on three-pointers, and 65% (15-23) at the free throw line.  The Lancers out-rebounded Hartford 38-35 and forced 15 turnovers.
    
Adeleke scored 25 of his game-high 31 points in the first half, adding 15 rebounds for his 12th double-double.  Cook scored 19 of his 29 points in the second half, finishing 6-11 on three-pointers.  Baker and David Ruffin each had 11 points, while Baker also had six assists.  Hartford shot 49% (33-68) from the field, including 33% (8-24) on three-pointers, and 89% (16-18) at the line.
