CLEMSON, S.C. -- The Longwood University men’s soccer team opened the 2005 road portion of its schedule with a 3-1 loss at Clemson university this evening in South Carolina. Clemson is currently ranked 13th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Poll. The Lancers fell to 0-1-1 on the season, while the Tigers improved their record to 2-0. Longwood will be back in action this weekend when it partakes in the Western Kentucky Tournament. The Lancers will face off against host WKU on Friday, September 9 at 7:00 p.m. and then will match-up with Eastern Illinois on Sunday, September 11 at Noon.
Clemson struck early, scoring a goal 1:32 into the contest. Dane Richards scored his first goal of the season for the Tigers on an assist by Bryson Moore. The Lancers responded with a goal of its own at the 15:29 mark to knot the game at 1-1. Senior midfielder Leon Malca/Hertzeliya, Israel (Mercer County (N.J.) C.C.) bent in a corner kick that sophomore forward Todd Runey/Midlothian (Collegiate) placed past Clemson goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi.
The game would stay tied at 1-1 until the 60th minute when Danny Poe scored on a double-assist by Richards and Ryan Roushandel. Richards pushed the game out of reach when he scored his second goal of the night with less three minutes to play to give the Tigers a 3-1 cushion.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) was strong in front of the net for the Lancers, finishing the contest with a career-high 12 saves, while Marfuggi made three saves for Clemson. The Tigers outshot the Lancers 31-8, while each team had six corner kicks in the game.
