RICHMOND, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 1-0 field hockey victory over America East Conference member UMBC Sunday afternoon in Richmond. The Lancers improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Retrievers fell to 0-2 on the year. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, September 7 in Washington, D.C. at Georgetown. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
The game was scoreless until the 67th minute when senior Julie Price/Stafford (North Stafford) was fouled on the endline and the Lancers were awarded a penalty stroke. Junior Katy Lernihan/Fredericksburg (Chancellor) calmly lifted the penalty stroke into the upper right hand corner past UMBC goalkeeper Ashley Benitez to give Longwood the lead and ultimately the 1-0 win.
"We were well matched in this contest,” said eighth-year head coach Nancy Joel. “I am extremely pleased with the outcome and the effort that the team put out this afternoon. We do need to work on our finishing for the upcoming matches against Georgetown and Virginia Commonwealth.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) finished the contest with four saves, while Benitez made three saves for the Retrievers. Longwood outshot UMBC 11-5, but only had three penalty corners to the Retrievers five.
