BOX SCORE

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Longwood University took a 3-0 women’s soccer shutout victory at Southern Conference member The Citadel Saturday afternoon in South Carolina. The Lancers improved to 2-1 this season as freshman Brooke Brumby/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) scored her first collegiate goal, and game-winning goal just 3:26 into the match, while The Citadel dropped to 1-2. Longwood will play again on Friday, September 9, at Western Carolina, also of the Southern Conference, in North Carolina.

At The Citadel, Longwood took the early 1-0 advantage when Brumby scored unassisted just minutes into the match played before a vocal crowd of 672. Senior Tiffany Rice/Virginia Beach (Kellam) made it 2-0 early in the second half when she, too, scored an unassisted goal at 48:48. Sophomore Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) provided for the final margin on a header into the back of the net from a corner-kick opportunity, assisted by Rice at 70:03.

“It was an amazing atmosphere with the field located in the center of campus,” said 12th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93 (130-67-8). “Their students lined the entire edge of one side of the field. We came through under the difficult circumstances, though, with another good day for Longwood women’s soccer.”

Longwood took a 20-11 advantage in shots, and had a 7-3 edge in corner-kicks. Junior keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) played the entire contest in front of the net for her first shutout of the season, making six saves for the Lancers. Brit Bunnell played the full 90 minutes in goal for the hosts as well, yielding the three goals with nine saves.
