HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Longwood University field hockey team defeated Robert Morris University 6-1 Saturday morning in Harrisonburg at the JMU field hockey complex. The Lancers were led by sophomore forward Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) who scored three goals and assisted on two others. Longwood improved its record to 1-1, while Robert Morris fell to 1-1. The Lancers will be back in action tomorrow Sunday, September 4 when they face off against UMBC in Richmond. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
Longwood scored early when senior Alexis Ramey/Westminster, Calif. (Marina) took a pass from Newbold and cracked a shot past Colonial goalkeeper Kate Dunlap at the 3:30 mark. The Lancers added a goal less than two minutes later when freshman Carra Bunner/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) tallied her first collegiate goal. Longwood pushed its lead to 4-0 on back-to-back goals by Newbold at the 10:31 mark and the 13:03 mark. Ramey then closed out the first half scoring for the Lancers, tallying her second goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining in the first stanza.
The Colonials broke up the LU shutout five minutes into the second half on an unassisted goal by Sam Lawless. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) stopped two consecutive shots by Lawless but was unable to stop her third attempt.
The Lancers buckled down and held RMU scoreless for the rest of the contest, while Newbold closed out Longwood’s scoring with her third goal to give the Lancers the 6-1 victory.
Sophomore Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) and West combined for three saves, while Dunlap made two saves for the Colonials. Longwood held the 11-7 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.
