Field Hockey Falls To Virginia 3-1

Sophomore Goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz Makes 10 Saves In Setback

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-1 field hockey road decision at the University of Virginia Wednesday afternoon in Charlottesville. The Lancers dropped to 2-7 on the season, while the Cavaliers improved to 6-4. Longwood will play again on Sunday, October 2 when they host St. Francis (Pa.) in Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University. Game time is slated for 10:00 a.m..

Virginia jumped out on top early scoring a goal 13 minutes into the first half. Katie Phillips converted on a penalty stroke to give the Cavaliers the 1-0 lead. UVA then tallied its second goal with just 3:26 remaining before halftime on Phillips second goal of the night.

A goal with 18:46 to play in the contest gave Virginia a 3-0 cushion. Erin Hayes scored the goal, with the assist being credited to Mia Link.

Longwood broke-up the Virginia shutout with 2:29 to play in the contest. Senior Sarah Hitchings/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) scored her third goal of the season to cut UVA’s winning score to 3-1.

Virginia held the 20-5 advantage in shots and the 10-3 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) finished the game making 10 saves for the Lancers, while Amy Desjadon and Katherine Blair combined to make three saves for the Cavaliers.
