Men's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision To 11th Ranked Duke

Sophomore Max Griessbach Scores His Second Goal of the Season

DURHAM, N.C --  Longwood University dropped a 3-1 men’s soccer decision at Atlantic Coast Conference member Duke University Tuesday evening in Durham, N.C.. The Blue Devils, who are currently ranked 11th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas National Poll, are the third team the Lancers have played this month that have been ranked in the Top-25. Longwood fell to 2-6-1 on the season, while Duke improved its record to 6-1-1. The Lancers will be back in action Sunday, October 2 when they play at Hartwick in their first Atlantic Soccer Conference match-up. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.

Duke got on board first at the 14:43 mark when Spencer Wadsworth headed in a cross that was driven into the box by Danny Miller.

The Blue Devils increased their lead to 2-0 at the 59:16 mark when Chris Loftus headed in a pass by Wadsworth. The Lancers responded quickly though, scoring a goal at 64:24, to cut the lead to 2-1. Senior midfielder Leon Malca/Hertzeliya, Israel (Mercer County C.C.) bent in a free kick that sophomore midfielder Max Griessbach/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman) headed past Duke goalkeeper Justin Papadakis.

Loftus scored the insurance goal and his second goal of the night just two minutes later at 66:35 when he blasted a shot from 25-yards out past sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus).

Duke outshot the Lancers 20-4 and held the 7-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Youmans made six saves for the Lancers, while junior goalkeeper Tyler Marsh/Mechanicsville (North Carolina Wesleyan) came off the bench to make one save in 11 minutes of action.
