BOX SCORE
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-2 women’s soccer road decision at Liberty University Monday night in Lynchburg, the team’s fifth one-goal loss this season. The Lancers dropped to 2-7, while the Flames improved to 3-3-3. Longwood will play again this Thursday night, September 29, hosting Coastal Carolina of the Big South Conference at Lancer Field beginning at 7 p.m..
At Liberty, also of the Big South Conference, the hosts got on the board first at 13:46 when Amy Oberlin bounced the ball over the head of junior keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove). Liberty went in front 2-0 at 28:44 when Sarah Davis tallied on a header, assisted on the cross from Kristin Faxon. Longwood narrowed the margin to 2-1 late in the period at 43:02 as freshman Brooke Brumby/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) scored on a loose ball from a corner kick opportunity. It remained 2-1 at the intermission.
Longwood tied the match at 2-2 at 64:16 when senior Melissa Cary/Bristow (Brentsville) scored unassisted on a free kick. The Flames, however, came right back 1:37 later and got the game-winner from Davis at 65:53 on another header from a corner kick by Alaina Hohnarth.
“We have a bad habit of getting behind and having to climb out of a hole,” said 12th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “At some point, we have to be proactive instead of reactive and make things happen for ourselves.”
Liberty took a 13-9 advantage in shots, though each team had seven corner kicks. Storrie played the first 45 minutes in front of the net for the Lancers, making two saves, while sophomore Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the final 45 minutes with one save. Sonia Rodriquez played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Flames with five saves.
