BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 1-0 men’s soccer victory over visiting East Carolina University tonight at Lancer Field. Sophomore forward Elvis Cosic/Richmond (J.R. Tucker) scored the game-winning goal for the Lancers; his first of the season. Longwood, who earned its first victory with the win, now holds a 1-5-1 record, while East Carolina fell to 0-6. The Lancers will be back in action this Saturday when they play at Mount St. Mary’s. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.

“The win was a long time coming,” explained first-year head coach Jon Atkinson. “It is a relief for the coaching staff and the players alike. It was well deserved after hard weeks of work. This win should give some good belief to our lads for the upcoming games.”

The game-winning goal was scored at the 58:38 when Cosic scored on a cross from classmate Max Griessbach/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman). Griessbach had received the ball on the outside flank from sophomore Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird). He cut the ball inside and took a few touches before bending in a perfect cross that Cosic was able to get past Pirate goalkeeper Chris Hicks.

The Lancers finished the game with a 13-11 advantage in shots, while East Carolina took a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus), who earned his first collegiate shutout, finished the contest with six saves, while Hicks made seven saves for East Carolina.
