Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 To Richmond In Hard-Fought Battle At Lancer Field

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a disappointing 1-0 men’s soccer decision to the University of Richmond Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field in Farmville. Spider senior Steven Wolfe scored the lone goal of the match on a penalty kick at 22:21 for the game-winner. The Lancers dropped to 0-5-1 this season, while Richmond improved to 3-3-0. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, September 21, hosting East Carolina University at Lancer Field beginning at 7 p.m..

Against Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference, the two teams were evenly-matched and battled hard throughout the entire contest. The Spiders got the decisive break midway through the opening half when a Longwood defender knocked down a UR forward in the box, resulting in the PK that proved the difference.

Richmond took an 11-8 advantage in shots, though Longwood had an 8-6 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) played the entire match in front of the net for the Lancers, only yielding the one goal with three saves. Matt Cully also played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Spiders with three saves as well for the shutout.
