CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 4-0 men’s soccer decision at Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia University Wednesday evening in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers are currently ranked 4th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas National Poll. The Lancers fell to 0-4-1 on the season, while the Cavaliers improved their record to 3-0-1. Longwood will be back in action Sunday, September 18 when they host Richmond at Lancer Field. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
Virginia scored its first goal at the 15:15 mark of the first half when Yannick Reyering hit a shot from 18-yards out that sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) was unable to save. Jeremy Barlow and Adam Cristman were credited with the double-assist. Longwood tightened up its defense for the rest of the half and Youmans made three saves to keep Virginia’s lead to 1-0 going into halftime.
The Cavaliers were able to push its lead to 2-0 19 minutes into the second stanza off a header by Cristman. Seven minutes later Virginia added another goal, again off a header, but this time by Ian Holder. The last goal of the night was scored off an own-goal by a Longwood player with 16 seconds left in the game.
Youmans, who played the full 90 minutes, finished the contest with seven saves, while Ryan Burke earned the shutout for Virginia. The Cavaliers outshot the Lancers 21-0 and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
