BOX SCORE

ELON, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 2-1 women’s soccer decision at Elon University of the Southern Conference Wednesday afternoon in North Carolina.  The Lancers record is now 2-4 this season, while the Phoenix improved to 2-2-2.  Longwood will play again on Saturday, September 17, hosting Appalachian State University, also of the Southern Conference, at Lancer Field beginning at 3 p.m..

At Elon, Longwood led 1-0 at the intermission as junior Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the season with an assist from freshman Brooke Brumby/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) at 9:21.

Elon rallied in the second half and tied the match at 1-1 on an own-goal off a Lancer defender at 66:40, and the Phoenix got the game-winning goal at 71:56 when Kerri Speers scored unassisted.

“We did exactly what we needed to do on the road to win by getting ahead early,” said 12th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93.  “Unfortunately, we made some mental mistakes in the second half to allow Elon the opportunity to score a couple of goals.”

Elon took a 19-5 advantage in shots, and had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.  Junior keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) played the first 57:28 in front of the net for the Lancers, yielding no goals while making four saves before getting a red card on a deny-goal foul.  Sophomore Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the final 32:32, allowing the two goals with two saves.  Lizz Johnson played the full 90 minutes in goal for Elon with two saves.
