BOX SCORE

MACON, Ga. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-1 women’s soccer decision to the University of South Florida, members of the Big East Conference, Sunday afternoon in Macon, Georgia. The Lancers record is now 2-3 this season, while the Bulls improved to 4-1. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, September 14, at Elon University of the Southern Conference in North Carolina.

Against South Florida, Longwood fell behind 1-0 at 11:59 on a goal from USF’s Jenny Mulvihill, with an assist from Erica Lewis on the cross and the score remained 1-0 at the intermission. The Lancers battled back and tied the match at 1-1 with a goal from junior Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) off a corner kick assist from senior Tiffany Rice/Virginia Beach (Kellam) at 62:45. It was Gravely’s team-leading third goal this season, and also Rice’s team-leading third assist.

The Bulls’ Mulvihill notched the game-winning goal late in the match at 79:01, assisted by Katie Reed. The Tampa-based institution added to the margin with a third goal at 81:43 as Lewis found the back of the net, assisted by Jenna Ball.

“It was another good effort but we just came up a little short,” said 12th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “We were tied against a Big East team for nearly 80 minutes after coming from behind to tie them.”

South Florida took an 11-6 advantage in shots, and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) played the entire contest in front of the net for the Lancers, making three saves. Casey Garrett played the full 90 minutes in goal for USF as well, also with three saves.
