BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 2-1 women’s soccer decision at Campbell University Friday night in its 2005 season-opener played in North Carolina. The Lancers dropped to 0-1 this season, while Campbell improved to 1-0. Longwood will play its home opener at Lancer Field this Sunday, August 28, hosting Big South Conference member institution Radford University at 1 p.m..

At Campbell, Longwood fell behind 1-0 (26:00) at the intermission, and trailed 2-0 (76:07) in the second half before sophomore Aynsley Birkner/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) scored on a corner-kick opportunity at 78:39, assisted by senior Tiffany Rice/Virginia Beach (Kellam). The Lancers still had several additional corner-kick chances to tie the match late but were unable to do so.

“We just did not get any breaks early,” explained 12th-year head coach Todd Dyer ’93. “We did keep fighting in the match and were able to make it close down the stretch. We’re anxious to return to Farmville for our home opener against Radford on Sunday afternoon.”

Campbell took a 10-6 edge in shots, though Longwood had a 7-4 advantage in corner-kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the entire contest in front of the net, allowing the two goals with three saves for the Lancers.

Longwood is competing this season in year three of its four-year NCAA Division I Reclassification.
