DOVER, Del. -- Longwood University dropped a baseball doubleheader at Delaware State Monday, falling 13-12 in the opener and 4-2 in the nightcap. The Lancers, playing for the first time in 13 days, are now 15-27 this season, while the Hornets improved to 18-25 overall. Longwood will play again Tuesday, May 10, at the University of Maryland beginning at 7 p.m..
At Delaware State in the opener, the host Hornets scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the third and fourth innings, two runs in the seventh inning, five runs in the eight inning, and plated the game-winning run in the ninth inning. Longwood scored two runs in the third, one run in the fourth, four runs in the fifth inning, two runs in the sixth inning, and three runs in the ninth inning to tie the game at 12-12.
Seniors Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (3-6, RBI) and Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (3-4, RBI) each collected three hits to lead the Lancer offense in the first game. Balus hit a solo home run, his fifth this season, in the fourth while adding a double and two stolen bases. Gillis had an RBI single in the third. Sophomore Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-4, 4 RBI) blasted two home runs for LU, including a two-run shot in the fifth, and another two-run homer in the sixth. He now has a team-leading 11 home runs this spring, along with his team-best 33 RBI. Freshmen Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-4, 2 RBI) and Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-1, 2 RBI) each contributed two RBI in the game as Lydon had a pinch-hit, two-run single in the ninth, and von Gersdorff had a two-run single in the fifth.
Freshman Isaac Weiderman/Chillicothe, Ohio (Huntington) (1-5) took the pitching loss in relief with the final 1.0 inning, allowing four hits and three runs, only one earned.
DSU scored the winning run after a pair of singles and a fielding error by the Lancers. The Hornets got three hits each from Kevin Hill (3-5, RBI), Brandon Gravely (3-5, 4 RBI), Justin Wenger (3-5, RBI), and Norris Gordon (3-5, RBI). Hill and Gravely each hit home runs, while Josh Schmidt (3-3) got the mound win in relief with the final 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and three runs, two earned, with three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Hornet Nick Bitter (4-7) tossed a complete-game, scattering seven hits and two runs, none earned, with three strikeouts over the 7.0 innings. DSU plated runs in the first and second innings, and added two runs in the sixth inning. Hill (2-3) had two hits for the hosts who again took advantage of two errors to score two runs.
Balus (2-4) and freshman Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (2-3) each had two hits, including a double from Ullrich while Balus added his team-leading 25th stolen base this season.
Sophomore Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (4-4) took the pitching loss with a complete-game effort on the mound, yielding seven hits and four runs, two earned, with two strikeouts.
