FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University senior student-athlete Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) has been named to the 2005 Division I Independent Baseball All-Academic Team. The academic team was selected by the sports information directors at member institutions from among nominations of student-athletes who have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher and have reached at least sophomore academic standing.
Gillis, a 6-0, 178-pound infielder/outfielder, started 25 of 39 games for the Lancers (16-32) this season. He hit .281 with six doubles, two home runs, 15 RBI, 14 runs, 2-4 stolen bases, a .416 slugging percentage, a .356 on-base percentage, and a .926 fielding percentage. Gillis contributed eight multi-hit games, four multi-RBI games, and had a season-best five-game hitting streak (8-18, .444). Robert had a 3.42 GPA while majoring in economics, and is the son of Robert and Elizabeth Gillis.
The 14 Division I independent baseball institutions include Longwood, UC Davis, Dallas Baptist, Hawaii-Hilo, IPFW, New York Tech, Northern Colorado, North Dakota State, Sacramento State, Savannah State, South Dakota State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American, and Utah Valley State.
