WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a baseball doubleheader at the College of William and Mary Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park in Williamsburg, falling 7-6 in the opener and 23-4 in the nightcap. The Lancers dropped to 16-31 this season while the Tribe improved to 25-24 with their two home wins. Longwood will complete its 2005 campaign next Tuesday, May 17, at Winthrop University of the Big South Conference beginning at 8 p.m. in South Carolina.
In the opener at W&M, Longwood jumped ahead 5-0 in the first inning against the Tribe of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). W&M, however, scored three runs in their half of the first and it was 5-3. The Lancers added a run in the third inning to lead 6-3 but the hosts plated one run in the fifth inning, and three runs in the sixth inning to take the one-run victory.
Freshman Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-3, 3 RBI) hit a two-run home run, junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (2-4, 2 RBI) had a two-run double, while sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (0-3, RBI) contributed an RBI sacrifice fly to the five-run inning. Lydon also added an RBI sacrifice fly in the third. Sophomore Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (4-5) took the pitching loss with the first 7.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs, four earned, with four strikeouts.
W&M scored early on RBI singles from Will Rhymes (2-4, RBI) and Mike DeCarlo (2-4, RBI) along with a sacrifice fly. The Tribe added a run in the fifth on a fielding error, and plated three runs in the decisive sixth on a three-run double from Greg Sexton (2-4, 3 RBI). Michael LaFleur (5-5) took the mound win in relief with 2.2 scoreless innings, yielding two hits with three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, W&M scored 23 runs on 23 hits, including six home runs, while handing LU its worst defeat of the season. The Tribe were led by Rhymes (3-4, 4 RBI) with a home run, Terry Revere (3-4, 2 RBI) with two home runs, Chris Rahl (2-4, 3 RBI) with a home run, DeCarlo (2-4, 3 RBI) with a home run, and Jason Losey (1-4, 4 RBI) with a grand slam home run. Patrick Kantakevi (3-0) earned the mound win with the first 7.0 innings, yielding just three hits and four runs, three earned, with four strikeouts.
Sophomore Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (1-2, 3 RBI) hit his team-best 13th home run, a three-run blast in the fourth inning for LU. Freshman Joe Bott/Elyria, Ohio (Elyria Catholic) (0-1, RBI) added an RBI grounder in the sixth inning, while Childress (2-4) had two hits for the Lancers. Sophomore Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) (1-8) took the pitching loss with the first 2.1 innings, allowing eight hits and nine runs, four earned, with two strikeouts.
William and Mary now holds a 6-5 lead in the all-times series against Longwood in baseball.
