EASTON, Pa. -- Longwood University earned a 14-6 women’s college lacrosse decision over host Lafayette Saturday afternoon in Easton, Pa.. The Lancers improved their record to 8-2 on the season, while the Leopards fell to 0-9 on the year. Longwood will be back in action tomorrow Sunday, April 10 when they face off against Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa.. Game time is slated for 11:00 a.m.
The game was knotted at 2-2 before Longwood gained control of the game. The Lancers rattled off five-straight goals over the final 14 minutes of the first half to hold a 7-2 cushion. Senior Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax) tallied two of the goals, while senior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard), sophomore Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) and junior Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle) accounted for the other three.
Lafayette drew within 9-5 on Samantha Ziegler's goal with 14:42 left in the second stanza, but Longwood again scored five-straight goals to put the game out of reach. Freshman Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert) scored two of her three goals in that span, while Strain tallied her second of the day and sisters Leanne Kibler/Oakton (Oakton) and Glenna Kibler/Oakton (Oakton) scored back-to-back goals.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) and freshman goalkeeper Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) combined for four saves for Longwood, while Stephanie Marcon and Jaclyn Kushner combined for four saves for Lafayette. The Lancers held the 27-11 advantage in shots, and had the slight 27-24 edge in ground balls.
