Women's Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker to George Washington 11-10

Sophomore Cathleen Strain Tallies Three Goals In Setback

WASHINGTON, D.C. --  Longwood University dropped a 11-10 women’s college lacrosse decision to host George Washington Wednesday afternoon in Washington D.C.. The Lancers fell to 7-2 on the season, while the Colonials improved their record to 8-2 on the year. Longwood will be back in action Saturday, April 9 when they face off against Lafayette in Easton, Pa.. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.

It was an evenly played first half as the teams went into the halftime tied at 6-6. George Washington scored first 32 seconds into the contest on a goal by Jamie Lee, assisted by Jenny Heisler. Longwood answered back with a goal of its own at the 4:00 minute mark scored by senior Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax).

The Lancers took their first lead of the game at 4-3 when sophomore Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) scored an unassisted goal. Junior Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle) had tied the game 1:30 earlier on a goal assisted by sophomore Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson)

Longwood seemed to be on the brink of going into halftime with the 6-5 advantage, having scored the go-ahead goal with 39 seconds remaining in the half. But it wasn’t meant to be, as the Colonials tied the game with 16 ticks left on the clock on a goal scored by Meghan McDonough

George Washington scored first in the second stanza to take the one-goal advantage, but back-to-back goals by Longwood propelled the Lancers into the lead. Strain scored her third goal of the night, while senior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard) tallied her first. The lead didn’t last long as the Colonials again knotted the game up with a goal by Meredith Heisler

The game stayed tied at 8-8 until Barry scored with 13:21 left in the contest. It was the last lead for the Lancers, as the Colonials rattled off three goals over the next five minutes to hold the largest lead of the game at 11-9. Shipp scored an unassisted goal with a minute left in the game to close the gap to one goal, but George Washington held strong and earned the victory.     

Senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished with six saves for Longwood, while Emily Fortunato and Caitlin Garman combined for eight saves. The Lancers held the 29-18 advantage in shots, while the Colonials held the 27-21 edge in ground balls.
