HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 11-6 baseball decision at James Madison University Tuesday in Harrisonburg. The Lancers dropped to 10-19 this season while the Dukes improved to 9-17 with their home victory. Longwood will play again Wednesday, April 6, host Appalachian State University at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 3 p.m..
At JMU of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), the host Dukes scored a run in the second inning before Longwood went ahead briefly at 4-1 with four runs in the third inning. The hosts, however, came right back with four runs of their own in the third inning to lead 5-4. JMU added a run in the fourth inning, though the Lancers added a run in the fifth inning before the Dukes scored two more runs in the sixth inning to lead 8-5. James Madison pushed across three more runs in the eighth inning for an 11-5 advantage, while Longwood scored a final run in the ninth inning.
Longwood was led sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-5) who collected three hits and scored two runs, while freshman Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-1, RBI) added his first collegiate home run with a two-out, pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth inning. Sophomores Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-2, RBI) and Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (1-4, RBI), along with freshman Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (1-4, RBI) each contributed RBI singles for the Lancers. Freshman John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (2-4) took the mound loss with the first 3.1 innings while yielding six hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts.
James Madison was led by Nate Schill (1-5, 3 RBI) who drove in three runs, including a two-run double in the eighth inning, while Dan Santobianco (2-5, RBI) had a pair of hits, including a solo home run in the second inning. Brian Leatherwood (1-1) earned the pitching win with the first 5.0 innings, scattering seven hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts. David Rich (1) got the save with the final 3.0 innings while allowing two hits and one earned run with no strikeouts.
James Madison now leads the all-time series against Longwood 7-0, a series dating back to the 1982 season. The Lancers will host the Dukes in Farmville at Lancer Stadium in two weeks on April 19.
