FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 15-6 women’s college lacrosse victory over visiting Davidson College Thursday evening to close out the 2005 season. The Lancers finished the year with a 12-3 overall record, while the Wildcats capped off their year at 4-12.
Davidson took the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Lindsay Frank 1:03 into the contest. Longwood responded with five-straight goals over the next seven minutes to take the 5-1 edge. Sophomores Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) and Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) both scored two goals apiece, while senior Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax) tallied one.
The Wildcats were able to stop Longwood’s scoring barrage and scored a goal with 11:14 remaining in the contest to cut LU’s lead to 5-2.
The Lancers again responded pushing their lead to seven goals by scoring four-straight goals; including back-to-back goals by Strain. Freshman Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert) and sophomore Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle) accounted for the other two goals.
Frank, of Davidson, scored her second goal of the night with 22 seconds remaining in the first half to cut Longwood’s halftime lead to 9-3.
The Lancers were able to put the game out of the Wildcats reach, scoring five-straight goals to open up the second half. Senior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard), junior Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax), Shipp, Barry and freshman Heather Caulk/Easton, Md. (Easton) each scored to push LU’s lead to 14-3.
Davidson did muster up three more goals in the last 13 minutes of the game. Frank scored her third of the night, while Sarah Walter scored back-to-back goals.
Caulk scored her second goal of the night and Longwood’s final goal of the contest to help give Longwood the 15-6 victory.
Junior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished the game with three saves, while Laura Johnson of Davidson finished with five. Longwood closed out the game with the 27-12 advantage in shots and the slight 22-18 edge in ground balls.
Cohen, Dress, senior Heather Crouse/Ellicott City, Md. (Centennial), senior Leanne Kibler/Oakton (Oakton), senior Shawn Slotke/Baltimore, Md. (Roland Park) and senior Leah Graham/Salisbury, Md. (J.M. Bennett) all closed out their four-year careers with Longwood this evening. This group helped the Lancers to an overall record of 54-7; an impressive .885 winning percentage over their four years. They also all helped the program reach the NCAA Division II Championships in both 2002 and 2003, including a runners-up finish in 2003.
