FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University swept both games of a college softball doubleheader against visiting George Washington University Tuesday evening to close out the 2005 season. The Lancers earned a 4-0 shutout in the opener and then took a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. LU closed out the season winning its last 10 contests to finish with a 32-20 overall record. The Colonials dropped to 9-29 on the season.
In the opener, Longwood took and early 2-0 lead after the first inning. Freshman Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) hit a one-out double to left field and then advanced to third on a single to center field by junior Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County). Both Hooe and Washington scored on a fielding error by George Washington’s second baseman Colleen Kegler.
The Lancers added a run in the second inning and fifth inning to increase its winning advantage to 4-0. Senior Alishia Stewart/Faber (Nelson County) accounted for the run in the second inning, while classmate Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) singled home Hooe for the fourth run.
Longwood held the George Washington to only three batters per inning for the first six innings and closed out four of those innings with double plays.
Steele earned her 20th victory of the season and third shut out, allowing only five hits, while striking out three and walking one.
In the nightcap, the Lancers took a 1-0 lead after the first inning on the excellent base running by Hooe. After hitting a one-out single to the shortstop, Hooe stole second base, then stole third base after Washington struck out and capped off the spectacular base running stealing home after the fourth pitch to Steele.
Longwood added four runs in the bottom of the third inning to increase its lead to 5-0. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back triples by senior Megan Camden/Bedford (Liberty) and sophomore Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis). Two runs scored on Camden’s triple, while Wilson scored one with her hit.
The Colonials scored their first run of the game when Caroline Howe scored on a fielding error by junior Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan).
LU added two runs in the sixth inning to increase its winning advantage to 7-1. Wilson highlighted the inning with a lead off single to right center. She scored two batters later.
Freshman Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) earned the victory for Longwood, her 12th of the season, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out six and walking three. Hooe finished the day going 3-4, with two RBI and two runs scored, while Camden was 2-5, with two RBI and one run scored.
Camden, senior Ashley Hawkins/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox), Steele and Stewart all finished their careers with Longwood.
Camden closed out her career playing in 194 games with 603 at bats, and 186 hits, including 28 doubles, seven triples and 13 home runs for a .308 batting average. She also accumulated 130 runs scored, 99 RBI, 66 walks and 29 stolen bases. Camden holds the Longwood career records for at bats (603) and hits (186) and is second in runs scored (130) and walks (66).
Hawkins finished her career playing in 91 games with 126 at bats and 28 hits, including two doubles, a triple and a home run. She also amassed 21 runs scored, 16 RBI, 12 walks and four stolen bases.
Steele closed out her career playing in 189 games with 546 at bats and 177 hits, including 40 doubles, five triples and 15 home runs, for a .324 batting average. She also has accumulated 141 runs scored, 128 RBI and 39 walks. She ranks first in the Longwood record book for runs scored (141), second in at bats (546), games played (189), RBI (128) and doubles (50). As a pitcher, Steele has made appearances in 115 games, getting the starting nod 98 times with 68 complete games. She has an overall record of 73-26 (.737). Steele has pitched in 625.2 innings, allowing 521 hits, 213 runs, 156 of which were earned, for a 1.75 ERA. She has struck out 409 batters and walked 136 batters. Steele is first in the Longwood record book for innings pitched (625.2), strike outs (409) and wins (73), second in winning percentage (.737) and complete games (68).
Stewart finished her career playing in 89 games with 189 at bats, and 51 hits, including a double. She accumulated 41 runs scored, 16 RBI and 18 walks. Stewart was also successful in 21 out of 27 stolen base attempts.
