WASHINGTON, D.C. – Longwood University swept both games of a college softball doubleheader against host George Washington University Sunday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field in Washington, D.C. The Lancers earned a 10-3 victory in the opener and then took a 5-0 decision in the nightcap. LU has won eight-straight contests and now holds a 30-20 record, while the Colonials fell to 9-27 on the season. Freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty), who extended her hitting streak to 19 games, led the way for LU, finishing the doubleheader going 5-7, with five RBI and four runs scored. Longwood will close out the 2005 season when it welcomes George Washington to Lancer Field for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 26. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
In the opener, the Colonials used a two hit, two run third inning to take the early lead. Elana Meyers led off the inning with a home run to right field to score the first run of the game. Lisa Cohen scored the second run of the inning when she was singled home by Caroline Howe.
The Lancers responded with a six-hit, five run fourth inning to take the 5-2 lead. Senior Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) drove in the Lancers first run of the inning when she singled up the middle to score Ryan Washington. Senior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) followed with a two RBI single to right field that scored freshman Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) and Shamana Washington. Sophomore Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) kept the inning going with a two-out single to left field. Wilson, who stole second, scored when junior Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) doubled to center field. Gordon accounted for the final run of the inning when she crossed home plate on a single by junior Becca Walker/Gainesville (Stonewall Jackson).
Longwood added two runs in the both the fifth and six inning and one run in the seventh inning to secure the 10-3 victory. Ryan Washington started off the fifth inning with a lead-off home run. Steele drove in the second run when she doubled to left field to score Hooe. It was Ryan Washington who again made things happen in the sixth inning, hitting her second home run in as many innings; a two RBI shot to right field. The lone run of the seventh came on a sacrifice fly by Gordon which scored freshman pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County).
Steele earned the victory, her 19th of the season and fourth in the row, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking one.
In the nightcap, the Lancers took a 1-0 lead after their half of the first inning. Ryan Washington started off the game hitting a double to center field. She reached third after Hooe grounded out to the pitcher and then scored when Steele singled through the right side.
Longwood used a six-hit, four run second inning to increase its lead to 5-0. Pepper Wilson, Gordon, junior Megan Wilson/Harrison Township, Mich. (L’ Anse Creuse), senior Ashley Hawkins/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox), Ryan Washington, and Hooe accounted for hits in the inning. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI single up the middle by Ryan Washington.
Mills earned the shutout victory for the Lancers, her second-straight shutout, allowing only three hits, while striking out seven and walking only one.
