Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Visiting Liberty; Defeats Flames 10-9 In Opener and 1-0 In Nightcap

FARMVILLE, Va. –
Longwood University swept both games of a college softball doubleheader against visiting Liberty University Tuesday at Lancer Field. The Lancers earned a 10-9 come-from-behind victory in eight innings in the opener and then took 1-0 decision in the nightcap. LU has won six-straight contests and now holds a 28-20 record, while the Flames fell to 16-26 on the season. Longwood will be back in action Thursday, April 21 when they welcome Howard to Lancer Field for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.

In the opener, the Flames used a five hit, four run first inning to take the early lead. A two run double by Ashley Williams highlighted the inning. Williams was able to score on the play after a two base error by junior catcher Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis).

Longwood cut the lead to 4-2 after its half of the first inning. Freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) started the inning off with a triple to centerfield. She scored after classmate Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) hit a triple of her own to centerfield. Hooe accounted for the second run of the inning when senior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) singled her home.

Liberty and Longwood both scored a run in the second inning to put the score at 5-3. The Lancers run came courtesy of senior Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) who was walked with the bases loaded. Senior Alishia Stewart/Faber (Nelson County) scored on the play.

Longwood tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the third inning. Wilson started things off when she hit a triple to right center. She was able to score on the play after a catching error by the Flames third baseman Sarah Love. Junior Becca Walker/Gainesville (Stonewall Jackson) tied the game a batter later when she hit her third home run of the year.

The Flames broke the 5-5 stalemate with a four hit, three run fifth inning. Liberty added a run in the sixth inning to hold a 9-5 advantage.

The Lancers mounted a comeback in the seventh inning to tie the game at 9-9. Walker started things off when she hit a two RBI single to center field to slash the Flames lead to 9-7. Walker then scored to cut the lead to one on a single by Stewart, while Ryan Washington tied the game with a single to centerfield that scored Stewart.

Senior Megan Camden/Bedford (Liberty) capped off the come-from-behind victory with a shallow single to right field that scored Hooe in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Steele earned the victory, her 18th of the season and third in the row, giving up eight earned runs on 13 hits.

In the nightcap, the Lancers scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Shamana Washington hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Ryan Washington to score and put Longwood up 1-0.

Freshman pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) earned the win for the Lancers, her 10th on the season and second shutout of the year, allowing only three hits, while striking out one and walking two.

On the day Ryan Washington finished 5-8, with one RBI and two runs scored, while Caitlin Hooe was 3-6, with one RBI and two runs scored.
