FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 16-6 baseball decision past visiting Virginia State University Sunday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers improved to 13-23 this season with their home win, while the Trojans dropped to 14-13. Longwood will host James Madison University on Tuesday, April 19, at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 3 p.m. -- the home finale for the Lancers this spring.
Against VSU, Longwood totaled 16 runs on 16 hits and scored in every inning except its final at-bat in the eighth inning. The Lancers took leads of 1-0 in the first inning, 4-0 in the second inning, 6-1 in the third inning, 7-1 in the fourth inning, 10-3 in the fifth inning, 14-4 in the sixth inning, and finally 16-6 in the seventh inning. Virginia State scored one run in the third, two runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth, and two runs in the seventh. The Trojans also committed six errors during the game.
Longwood scored in the first when sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-3) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The Lancers added three runs in the second as junior Corey Huemmer/ Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (3-4, 6 RBI) slammed a three-run home run to left field, scoring senior Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (2-5, 3 RBI) and freshman Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-4, RBI). LU added two runs in the third as Gillis hit a two-run home run to right field, scoring sophomore Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-4).
The Lancers scored again in the fourth as sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-3, RBI) singled to score Ames who had reached on a two-out double. Longwood plated three more runs in the fifth, all scoring after two outs, as freshman Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-3, 2 RBI) had an RBI double to the fence in left-center field to score classmate Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (2-4); Huemmer had an RBI single to score Lydon before scoring himself on a steal of home while executing a double-steal play.
Longwood pushed across four runs in the sixth as Gillis had an RBI single to score Yarbrough; Lydon hit a sacrifice fly to score von Gersdorff; and Huemmer added his second home run on the day, this time a two-run shot to left field scoring Gillis. LU added its final two runs in the seventh as von Gersdorff had an RBI single to score Yarbrough; and sophomore Matt Duval/Mechanicsburg, Pa. (Trinity) (1-1, RBI) had a pinch-hit RBI single to score freshman Joe Bott/Elyria, Ohio (Elyria Catholic) who had drawn a walk.
Freshman John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (3-4) earned the pitching win with the first 5.0 innings on the mound, scattering eight hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts.
Virginia State was led by Steve Perkinson (3-4, 3 RBI) who had three hits and three RBI, and Charles Monroe (3-3, RBI) who also had three hits for the Trojans. Brandon Rucker took the pitching loss with the first 6.0 innings, allowing 13 hits and eight earned runs with two strikeouts.
