FARMVILLE, Va., -- Longwood University swept both games of a college softball doubleheader against visiting Coppin State Wednesday afternoon. The Lancers won the first game 10-2 in five innings and closed out the nightcap with an 11-1 victory in five innings. Longwood improved its record to 26-20 on the year and has now won four straight, while Coppin State dropped to 3-27 on the season. LU will be back in action Tuesday, April 19 when it welcomes Liberty to Lancer field for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
In the opener, the Lancers scored first, taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) hit a two-out single and then scored one batter later when junior Becca Walker/Gainesville (Stonewall Jackson) cracked a triple to right field. Walker accounted for the second run of the inning, while senior Ashley Hawkins/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) closed out the innings scoring when she scored from second on an infield single by freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty).
Longwood used a two-hit, three run third inning to increase its lead to 6-0. Shamana Washington and senior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) accounted for the hits in the inning.
Coppin State cut the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth, but a five hit, four run bottom of the fourth inning increased LU’s lead to 10-2. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI triple to right center by freshman Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman).
The Lancers finished with 11 hits in the contest, including two a piece from Ryan Washington, Shamana Washington and Gordon. Hooe and sophomore Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) each added one hit and two RBI. Steele earned the victory for Longwood, tossing a one-hitter. She allowed only three total base runners and struck out four batters and walked one.
In the nightcap, Pepper Wilson got things rolling in the first inning with a single that drove in Camden and Shamana Washington. Junior Megan Wilson/Harrison Township, Mich. (L’ Anse Creuse) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Steele and then freshman Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) gave the Lancers a 5-0 lead when she hit a long double to center field that scored both Pepper Wilson and Gordon.
Pepper Wilson sparked the second inning as well, hitting a two RBI double to center field, which helped LU increase its lead to 7-0. The Lancers added one more run before the inning was over to hold the 8-0 advantage.
Longwood increased its lead to 11-0 with a four hit, three run third inning which was highlighted by a two-run homer by Shamana Washington. The Eagles broke up the Lancers shut out in the fourth inning when Mia Willis hit a single down the left field line that scored Jenny Harrell.
Pepper Wilson and Shamana Washington led the Lancers in game two. Pepper Wilson went 2-3, with four RBI and two runs scored, while Shamana Washington went 2-2, with two RBI and three runs scored. Freshman Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) earned the victory, giving up one run on four hits, while striking out four.
