CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., – Longwood University swept both games of a college softball doubleheader at Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) member Virginia Tuesday afternoon. The Lancers won the first game 5-2 and closed out the nightcap with a 7-2 victory. The Lancers improved their record to 24-20 overall on the season, while the Cavaliers dropped to 16-24 on the year. Longwood will be back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 13 when it welcomes Coppin State to Lancer Field for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
In the opener, Virginia held a slight 1-0 lead after three innings, but Longwood scored one run in the fourth, three runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth to gain a 5-1 lead.
The Lancers tied the game in the top of the fourth on a lead-off home run by senior Megan Camden/Bedford (Liberty); her fourth home run of the season. LU took the lead in the fifth inning when senior Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) drove a single down the left field line that scored freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty). Senior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) hit home Shamana Washington with a triple down the right field line and then scored on a single by Camden to close out the inning. The Lancers added its final run of the game in the sixth inning when junior Becca Walker/Gainesville (Stonewall Jackson) scored on a fielder’s choice hit by freshman Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman).
Camden and Ryan Washington, who both finished with two hits apiece, led Longwood. Camden added two RBI and one run scored, while Ryan Washington added one RBI and one run scored. Steele earned her 16th win of the season and second win in a row, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out one.
In the nightcap, Longwood jumped out on top early scoring two runs in the first inning and adding five more in the third inning to lead 7-1. In the first inning, the Lancers tallied three hits, including a RBI single by Camden that drove in Hooe for the second run of the inning. Ryan Washington who hit a double to center field that scored three runs highlighted the third inning. Shamana Washington and Camden also accounted for hits in the inning.
Virginia scored its first run of the game in the bottom half of the third inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, freshman pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) walked Kierstie Cameron, which allowed Lindsey Preuss to score. The Cavaliers added a second run in the fifth inning after Jenn Wynn singled up to middle to score Jessica Taylor; who had led off the inning with a triple.
Camden and Ryan Washington again led the Lancers. Camden finished 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored, while Ryan Washington closed out the game with two hits, three RBI and one run scored. Mills took home the victory for LU, giving up two runs on eight hits, while striking out two and walking three.
