CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Longwood University took a 7-4 baseball victory at The Citadel Tuesday in South Carolina.  The Lancers improved their record to 12-22 this season with the road win, while the Bulldogs dropped to 12-19.  Longwood and The Citadel will complete the two-game, mid-week series on Wednesday, April 13, in South Carolina beginning at 3 p.m..
At The Citadel of the Southern Conference, Longwood took leads of 1-0 in the first inning, 3-1 in the fifth inning, 5-1 in the seventh inning, and 7-4 in the eighth inning.  The host Bulldogs scored a run in the second inning, and added three runs in the seventh inning.
The Lancers took an early 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-4, 3 RBI) grounded-out to score senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-5, RBI) who had opened the game getting hit by a pitch and stealing both second and third base.  Balus now totals a team-high 19 stolen bases this season.  Yarbrough made it 3-1 in the fifth with a one-out, two-run double to plate Balus, again, along with sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-3, RBI) after each had singled.  
    
LU added two more runs in the seventh as freshman Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (1-5, RBI) had a one-out RBI double to score sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-3) who had reached base with a single to lead-off the inning.  Ullrich later scored when he stole home (delay) as the Lancers executed a double-steal play.  Balus added a one-out RBI single in the eighth to score junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (1-1) who had drawn a pinch-hit walk to open the frame.  Childress plated the second run of the inning with a two-out RBI single to score Ames who had reached on a throwing error while sacrifice bunting.
    
Sophomore Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) (1-6) earned his first collegiate pitching win with the first 6.0 innings on the mound, scattering five hits and one earned run with one strikeout and no walks.  Classmate Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1) pitched the final 2.1 scoreless innings for his first collegiate save, yielding just one hit.
    
The Citadel was led by Brady Mashak (2-4, RBI) who had two hits and an RBI, including a double, while Matt Matulia (2-4) and Josh Stackley (2-4) each added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs as well.  Creighton McCallum (0-1) took the pitching loss with the first 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs with one strikeout.
