Women's Lacrosse Wins Third-Straight Contest With 15-4 Victory Over Howard

Junior Ali Shafer Scores Three Goals Against Bison

FARMVILLE, Va. --  Longwood University earned a 15-4 women’s college lacrosse decision over visiting Howard University, Tuesday afternoon at Lancer Field. The Lancers, who have won three-straight games, improved their record to 10-2, while the Bison fell to 2-7 on the year. Longwood will be back in action Friday, April 22 when they face off again Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass.. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.

With the game tied 1-1, Longwood scored three-straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Sophomore Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) tallied back-to-back goals, while senior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard) scored her ninth goal of the year. 

Howard cut LU’s lead to two goals when Iram Abdullah scored her second goal of the day. The Lancers responded, closing out the half with two goals to hold a 6-2 advantage. Junior Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle) and junior Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) accounted for the final goals of the first stanza. 

To begin the second half, Longwood rattled off six-straight goals to take a commanding 12-2 lead with 21 minutes remaining in the contest. Shafer and senior Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax) both scored two goals a piece, while Shipp and senior Leanne Kibler/Oakton (Oakton) each tallied one goal.

The Bison stopped the Lancers scoring barrage with a goal by Synister Washington at the 42:22 mark. Longwood would score three goals in the final 16 minutes, while Howard found the back of the net one more time to put the final score at 15-4.     

Strain who finished the game with three goals and two assists and Shafer who tallied three goals led Longwood. Junior Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) and freshman Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) combined for six saves for Longwood, while Bianca Lamar and Shatarah Ramirez combined for eight saves for Howard. The Lancers held the 29-13 advantage in shots, while both team finished with 18 ground balls.
