Women's Lacrosse Closes Out Three-Game Road Swing With 12-9 Victory Over Lehigh

Sophomore Missy Rumbley Scores Two Goals In Win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --  Longwood University earned a 12-9 women’s college lacrosse decision over host Lehigh Sunday afternoon in Bethlehem, Pa.. The Lancers improved their record to 9-2 on the season, while the Hawks fell to 4-8 on the year. Longwood will be back in action Tuesday, April 12 when they welcome Howard to Lancer Field. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.

The Lancers controlled the game from the start, building a 5-0 lead 18 minutes into the first half. Senior Leanne Kibler/Oakton (Oakton) started the scoring off with a goal three minutes into the contest. Freshman Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert), junior Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle), junior Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) and sophomore Missy Rumbley, Baltimore, Md. (Parkville) accounted for the other early goals.

Lehigh tallied two goals to cut LU’s lead to 5-2, but the Lancers closed out the half with goals by senior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard), Haines and Rumbley to hold the 8-2 edge.

Lehigh drew within 11-7 on Barrie Cominsky’s goal with 6:51 left in the contest, but Longwood broke the Hawks momentum with Shipp’s second goal of the day at the 28:49 mark. Lehigh scored two goals in the final minute of the contest to put the final score at 12-9.

Shipp, Shafer, Rumbley, and Haines all contributed two goals for the Lancers. Senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished with seven saves in the contest, while freshman goalkeeper Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) tallied two in nine minutes of action. Longwood held the 30-23 advantage in shots, while Lehigh had the 25-17 edge in ground balls.
