GLEN BURNIE, Md., – Longwood University swept both games of a college softball doubleheader at Coppin State Friday afternoon, winning the first game 21-1 in five innings and 5-2 in the nightcap. The Lancers improved to 18-16 overall on the season, and have won four straight, while the Eagles dropped to 0-22 on the year. Longwood will be back in action Sunday, April 3 when they play a doubleheader at Norfolk State. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
In the opener, the Lancers scored five runs in the second inning and added seven more in the third inning to lead 12-0. LU closed out the scoring with a nine run fourth inning to claim the lopsided victory. Junior Megan Wilson/Harrison Township, Mich. (L’ Anse Creuse) started things rolling in the second with a three-run homer to left field that scored sophomore Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) and junior Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan). Freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) doubled to right center to score junior Becca Walker/Gainesville (Stonewall Jackson) and give Longwood a 4-0 lead. Ryan Washington then scored on a sacrifice fly hit by freshman Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman).
The seven run third inning featured six hits, four of which were doubles. Gordon, Ryan Washington, Hooe and senior Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) each accounted for a double. The nine run fourth inning featured seven hits and was highlighted by Pepper Wilson hitting a grand slam to left field; the second grand slam for the Lancers in four games. Pepper Wilson finished the game going 3-3 with five RBI and four runs scored. Megan Wilson closed out the game going 3-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. Senior pitcher Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) earned the victory for Longwood, giving up only two hits, while striking out three batters in 3.0 innings of work. Gordon closed out the game on the mound for the Lancers; her first time pitching as a Lancer, and gave up only three hits, while striking out one and walking one in 2.0 innings.
In the nightcap, Longwood scored two runs in the first inning, added one run in the third inning and led 5-1 after four full innings. In the first inning, Shamana Washington cracked her third double of the day to score Ryan Washington. Steele accounted for the Lancers second run of the inning hitting a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Hooe. Steele then hit a single in the third inning that knocked in Hooe again and gave LU a 3-0 lead. Shamana Washington capped off her day with a double to right center that scored freshman Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Alishia Stewart/Faber (Nelson County) had scored the first run of the fourth inning on a ground out to shortstop by Hooe.
Coppin State scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Raquel Sealy tripled to right center and then scored on a fielders choice by Amanda Noble. Sealy scored the Eagles second run of the game in the fifth inning after she had gotten on base with a single to right center.
Longwood was led by Hooe who went 2-3 with a RBI and two runs scored and by Shamana Washington who was 2-4 with two RBI. Freshman Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) earned the victory giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking one.
