Women's Lacrosse Dominates Canisius With 22-8 Victory

Junior Jenn Shipp Finishes With Five Goals And Three Assists In Victory

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 22-8 women’s college lacrosse decision over visiting Canisius College Friday afternoon at Lancer Field. The Lancers improved to 6-1 on the season and have won their last five contests, while the Golden Griffins dropped to 4-3 on the year. LU was led by junior Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle) who scored a team-high five goals and assisted on three others. Longwood will close out a three-game home stand when they welcome Manhattan to Farmville, April 3. Game time is slated for noon.

Longwood went ahead 5-0 five minutes of the contest on goals by sophomores Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) and Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) and three-straight goals by Shipp. Canisius cut the lead to 5-1 when Erica Nasca scored her first of six goals on a free position shot, but the Lancers rattled off four more goals to hold a commanding 9-1 lead seven minutes into the contest.

The Golden Griffins found their grove and scored five-straight goals of their own to slash LU’s lead to 9-6 with less than nine minutes to play in the first stanza. Nasca accounted for three of the goals, while Amanda Marts tallied two.

The Lancers scored three more goals before halftime to hold a 12-6 advantage. Senior Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax), freshman Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert) and junior Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) each notched a goal.

Longwood continued to dominate in the second half, scoring five goals before Canisius found the back of the net again. Strain and Shipp both scored two, while Cohen tallied her second of the game. Nasca stopped the scoring barrage by Longwood when she found the back of the net at the 45:43 mark of the second half.

LU’s Cohen, Barry, freshman Heather Caulk/Easton, Md. (Easton) and sophomore Missy Rumbley/Baltimore, Md. (Parkville) closed out the scoring for the Lancers, while Nasca capped of her impressive game for Canisius with her sixth and final goal at the 54:00 mark.

Longwood held the 39-15 advantage in shots and had a 23-13 edge in ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) made four saves for the Lancers, while Rasheeda Brenton and Katie Ferguson combined for 12 saves for Canisius.
