CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Longwood University softball team dropped an 8-0 five-inning decision to Tennessee in the quarterfinals of the Charleston Southern Tournament Sunday morning. The Lancers, who went 3-1 in pool play and then defeated East Tennessee State in the first round of tournament play before falling to the Volunteers, currently holds a 9-9 overall record on the season. LU will be back in action when they travel to Lynchburg for a doubleheader against Liberty. The first game is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
Tennessee scored two runs in the first, and three runs in both the second and third innings to earn the 8-0 victory over Longwood. The Volunteers Monica Abbott and Stacey Jennings combined for the shutout victory. Abbott gave up one hit, while striking out seven batters in 3.0 innings pitched, while Jennings pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking about two. Freshman outfielder Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) had the lone hit for the Lancers; a double coming in the first inning.
