WASHINGTON, D.C., – Longwood University swept both game of a college softball doubleheader at Howard University Thursday evening, winning the first game 24-0 in five innings and 9-1 in five innings in nightcap. The Lancers scattered 34 hits over the two games, including 10 home runs; eight of which were hit in the first game. LU improved to 16-16 overall on the season, while the Bison dropped to 10-15 on the year. Longwood will be back in action tomorrow, Friday April 1 when they play a doubleheader at Coppin State. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
In the opener, the Lancers scored seven runs in the first inning and led 13-0 after two innings. Sophomore Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) and junior Becca Walker/Gainesville (Stonewall Jackson) both hit home runs in each inning, while senior Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) tallied a two-run homer in the first inning. After a scoreless third inning, Longwood freshman Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to increase LU’s lead to 16-0. The Lancers closed out the game with a seven hit, eight run fifth to claim the lopsided victory. Junior Megan Wilson/Harrison Township, Mich. (L’ Anse Creuse) hit a grand slam; her first of her career, while Walker added her third homer of the night, a solo shot. Pepper Wilson led the Lancers going 3-3, with six RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base, while Walker went 4-4, with five RBI and five runs scored. Senior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) earned the victory for Longwood giving up one hit, which came in the first inning, and striking out four batters.
In the nightcap, freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) started off a three-run first inning for the Lancers with a lead-off home run. Junior Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) accounted for the other two runs of the innings when she singled to drive in both Steele and senior Megan Camden/Bedford (Liberty). Longwood tacked on three more runs in the second inning, including two runs on a homer by Shamana Washington that also scored Hooe. The Bison scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third when Debbie Lee scored on a throwing error by Camden. LU added three runs in the fourth inning to secure the 9-1 victory.
Longwood was led by Gordon who went 2-3 with three RBI, while Shamana Washington was 3-3, with two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) earned the victory giving up one run, which wasn’t earned, on five hits, while striking out three.
