NORFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader at Norfolk State University Wednesday in Norfolk, winning 5-3 in the opener and 2-0 in the nightcap. The Lancers improved to 10-18 this season, while the Spartans dropped to 6-24. Longwood will play again this Saturday, April 2, hosting George Mason University for a doubleheader at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m..
In the opener, Longwood led 3-2 after two innings, and 5-2 through six innings before Norfolk State added a final run in the seventh inning. Senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-2) led the Lancers with a pair of hits and two stolen bases while sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-4, RBI) and freshman Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-3, RBI) each drove in a run. Childress had an RBI single in the fifth inning, and von Gersdorff had an RBI single in the second inning.
Sophomore Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (3-3) took the mound win while pitching the first 6.2 innings, yielding seven hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. Sophomore Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (2) earned his second save with the final out of the game.
Norfolk State was led by Ryan Reddick (1-3, RBI) who had an RBI double in the seventh inning. Rocco Savage (0-2) had the pitching loss with the first 5.0-plus innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood managed two runs in the fourth inning and made it stand behind the combined shutout pitching of freshmen Isaac Weiderman/Chillicothe, Ohio (Huntington) (1-3) and Rob Moody/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1). Weiderman went the first 6.0 innings, scattering four hits with two strikeouts for his first collegiate win. Moody pitched the final 1.0 inning with a strikeout for his first collegiate save.
The Lancers were led at the plate by Childress (1-2), along with freshmen Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (1-3) and Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-3) with one hit each. Childress and Ullrich each singled in the fourth inning and later scored with help from a fielding error, while Lydon contributed a double.
The Spartans were led by Luke Foss (0-3) who took the pitching loss with a complete-game effort of 7.0 innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.
