FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 4-3 men’s tennis victory past the University of Mary Washington Wednesday at the Lancer Courts in Farmville. The Lancers improved to 3-10 this season, and will play again Saturday, April 2, at Hampden-Sydney College beginning at 1 p.m..
Against Mary Washington, Longwood swept the three doubles matches for the one team point, and won three of six singles for the team triumph. In doubles, sophomore Rashko Patnikov/Bankya, Bulgaria (Smirnenski) and junior Tobias Guennel/Plauen, Germany (Albert-Einstein) won at #1 (8-5), as did senior Chris Newman/Chesapeake (Hickory) and junior Ian Young/Bowie, Md. (Eleanor Roosevelt) at #2 (8-4), along with freshmen Mani Barajas-Alexander/Arlington (Bishop O’Connell) and Ross McBee/Stafford (Colonial Forge) at #3 (8-2).
In singles, Newman won at #2 (7-6[3], 1-6, 7-5), Guennel won at #3 (6-4, 0-6, 7-5), and Barajas-Alexander won at #5 (6-4, 6-4).
