Women's Lacrosse Stuns #20 William and Mary With 9-8 Victory

Junior Goalkeeper Emily Wilson Makes Nine Saves In Victory

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 9-8 women’s college lacrosse decision over visiting William and Mary who is ranked #20 in the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll this evening at Lancer Field. The Lancers improved to 5-1 on the season and have won their last four contests, while the Tribe dropped to 3-5 on the year. LU will return to action this Friday, April 1 when they host Canisius at Lancer Field beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Down 7-5 with twenty minutes to play in the contest, Longwood forged a comeback scoring four-straight goals to hold a two-goal advantage with 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Sophomore Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) started off the four goal comeback when she scored on an assist by senior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard) at the 45:09 mark. Dress tallied an unassisted goal 1:22 later to knot the game at 7-7, while classmate Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax) tallied her third goal of the night to give the Lancers the lead for good. Strain closed out the scoring for LU with the winning-goal at the 55:52 mark.

The Lancers and the Tribe played an evenly matched first half; each team scoring five goals. Longwood scored first seven minutes into the game when sophomore Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) scored on a free position shot. La Nola of William and Mary tied the game two minutes later, but junior Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle) and Cohen scored back-to-back goals to give Longwood a 3-1 edge. The Tribe scored to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Lancers again had an answer when junior Ali Shafer/Faifax (Fairfax) notched a goal at the 15:30 mark.

William and Mary found its grove as it scored three-straight goals to go ahead of Longwood 5-4 with a little less than four minutes to play in the stanza. Cohen scored her second free position goal of the night at the 28:44 mark to tie the game at 5-5.

Junior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) was spectacular in front of the net for Longwood finishing the game with nine saves. William and Mary held the slight 25-17 edge in shots, while Longwood finished with the 17-16 edge in ground balls.
