NORFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 7-5 baseball decision at Old Dominion University Tuesday night in Norfolk. The Lancers dropped to 8-18 this season while the Monarchs improved to 16-16 with their home victory. Longwood will play again Wednesday, March 30, at Norfolk State University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m..
At ODU of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), the host Monarchs scored a run in the second inning before Longwood tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the fifth inning. The Lancers took a 2-1 lead with a run in the sixth inning before ODU scored six runs in the sixth inning to take control at 7-2. LU did add three runs in the seventh inning to close to 7-5, but neither team scored again.
Longwood was led by four freshmen: Joe Bott/Elyria, Ohio (Elyria Catholic) (2-4, RBI), Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (2-5, RBI), Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (2-3), and Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-4). Bott had an RBI single in the sixth inning, adding a double, while Ullrich had an RBI single in the seventh inning. Sophomore Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) (0-6) took the mound loss with the first 5.1 innings while yielding six hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.
Old Dominion was led by Patrick Nichols (2-4, RBI) and Dana Arrowood (1-3, 2 RBI), while Kyle Dubois (3-0) earned the pitching win with 1.2 innings of middle relief, scattering four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. James Burok (3) got the save with the final 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
Old Dominion had defeated Longwood 9-2 in Farmville earlier this season on March 10.
