FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University dropped a 3-1 college softball decision to Ohio University in its opening game of the Lancer Invitational Tournament, Tuesday afternoon. The Lancers, who are now 14-16 on the season, will close out the tournament with three games tomorrow, March 23. LU will face Ohio at 9:00 a.m., Maryland-Eastern Shore at 11:30 a.m., and UNC Greensboro at 4:30 p.m.
The Bobcats jumped out on top early, scoring two runs in the top half of the second inning. Jennifer Tisevich started off the inning with a single to left field and then scored three batters later on a single by Marian Davis. Davis accounted for Ohio’s second run of the inning when she scored on an error by sophomore catcher Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis).
Longwood was able to slice the lead to 2-1 in the third inning. Freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) began the inning reaching base on an error by OU’s shortstop Maureen McKelvey. Washington then stole second and reached home after senior pitcher Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) singled to centerfield.
The Bobcats scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on a single by McKelvey that scored Zoe Heim.
Steele took the loss for the Lancers, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking three in 7.0 innings of work. Heim of OU earned the victory, giving up one run, which was unearned, on six hits.
