Softball Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker to UC Santa Barbara To Close Out San Diego State University Classic

Freshman Caitlin Hooe Goes 2-for-3 With A Triple And A RBI In Setback

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Longwood University softball team fell to UC Santa Barbara 3-2 in 11 innings to close out the San Diego State University Classic Sunday afternoon. LU finished the tournament with a final record of 1-4. The Lancers, who are now 14-14 on the season, will be back in action this Tuesday and Wednesday when they host the Lancer Invitational Tournament. LU will face Ohio University on Tuesday, March 22 to open up its portion of the tournament. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.

Longwood broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when senior Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) drove in freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) with a single to second base.

UC Santa Barbara used a two-run fourth to claim a slight 2-1 lead. With two outs and players on second and third, Liz Walters hit a double to right center to score both Lindsey Herrin and Danielle Meyers. The Lancers tied the game up in the top half of the seventh inning when freshman Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) hit a triple to left center which scored Ryan Washington. The Gauchos scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning when Kendra Singley, who was placed on second to start the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Herrin, stole home.

Senior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) took the loss for the Lancers, giving up three runs, none of which were earned, on only four hits, while striking out three and walking three in 10.1 innings of work. Steele did not give up a hit over the final five innings. Hooe finished the game going 2-3 with a RBI, while Shamana Washington tallied one hit and one RBI.
