MORAGA, Calif. -- Longwood University earned a 15-12 decision over host Saint Mary’s in a women’s lacrosse match Wednesday afternoon in Moraga, Calif. The Lancers, who are now 3-1 on the season, were led by senior Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax) who scored four goals in the contest. LU will be back in action when they face off against Oregon Tuesday, March 22 in Baltimore, Md.
Longwood and St. Mary’s swapped goals throughout the first half until the Gaels took a slight 4-3 lead on back-to-back goals by Lauren Riggers and Rosy Iaccino. The Lancers responded with three straight free position goals to close out the half with a 6-4 lead. Freshman Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert), sophomore Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) and senior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard) each accounted for a goal.
Longwood came out flying in the second half, scoring three more goals to hold a 9-4 lead with 25:00 left in the contest. Cohen scored two of the goals, while senior Leanne Kibler/Oakton (Oakton) scored the other. The Gaels came storming back though, cutting the lead to 9-7 by scoring three straight goals of their own.
Longwood and St. Mary’s traded goals again until the 41:00 minute mark when Haines started another three-goal scoring barrage for the Lancers. Haines scored back-to-back goals, while junior Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) notched her first of the night with three minutes remaining to give LU a 15-10 advantage. The Gaels found the back of the net two more times in the final minutes, but the Lancers were able to hold on for the three-goal victory.
Junior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished the game making a season-high 14 saves for the Lancers; including 11 in the second stanza. St. Mary’s held the slight 27-26 edge in shots, while Longwood finished with the 20-16 edge in ground balls.
